OUGD603 / Extended Practice / Yearbooks / First Meeting

We arranged and met with Duncan this morning which was enlightening with regards to a number of aspects of the brief... the main point was that he wants to avoid the standard person per page kind of yearbook and instead wants us to embody the 'journey of chaos' that the students live in within their studio sections and the high intensity of the course itsself!

We left with the next meeting to involve some students in order to really get a grip of the course as it runs day to day.

It's a great brief, with Duncan keen for us to eschew the corporate jargon and sell the course through 'eye candy' which happens to be easier with a course full of sumptuous visuals. He's also giving us complete control over any concept that we decide to bring to the table. Below is our initial concept ideas:

  • play on the course's eagerness to get away from the tag of 'decoration'
  • explore the sketches and offcuts from within the studio, giving a sense of the amount of work going into pieces.
  • emphasise the importance of their studio as a morning til night space that buzzes and has the feeling of a manic machine. This could lead to use of photography documenting a typical day in the studio / maybe v early morning and v late at night.
In terms of this last point about Dawn-til-dusk, we then thought about how the work could be arranged. Perhaps some sort of colour order from the light of morning to the dark of night could be quite beautiful.

We'll reconvene next week having researched:
  • pattern / decoration
  • how studio / practice is documented
  • non-traditional biography
  • choatic layout
Also have a nosey around the studio and take some preliminary imagery.
