OUGD603 / Extended Practice / Laura Farrall Brand / Typography and Image Making

Initial thoughts on Rudge, Laura's favourite bike manufacturer led me to Umbro's vintage logos, from similar eras! Beautiful images in their own right and very of their time, indicating quality and reliability with an artistic backbone.

The same can be said for quality clothing lines Arpenteur and Armor Lux who are trying to convey the same quality and consistency by appearing as if from the early 20th century. (I believe both brands originate from this era).

When returning to the Rudge bikes, I love a couple of items that occur again and again.

  • The black on white numberplates.
  • The double gold lines.
  • The numbers in yellow circle!

I began following the lines of the bike to see how I could link these to typography and hint at Laura's subject matter.

Below are the first shapes created. I love them! I began stripping bits away to see if it would still read as a bike and indeed a bike of that time!

I don't quite think they're working yet but see potential!

Below I pushed typography and fell upon a couple which really work for me. Recalling the era and indicating knowledge and somebody in control of their work.
