The pieces began to slot together as soon as I added the colour and began playing with typography. I decided that the hand drawn scrawl should sit on top of everything else.
The main concept behind the hand drawn scrawl is imagining the authors' penmanship and the charm behind scribbled notes that we as readers never see!
I strongly believe that the low legibility paired with the sideways orientation will stand out on the bookshelf, taking viewers in to look closer.
The hand drawn type personalises Caitlin Moran's book, visualises the madness of A Clockwork Orange and lends a cheeky charm to Emil and the Detectives.
The typography is kept to a bare minimum on each cover, with only the provided text included and at a small size, using the beautiful geometric Averta to contrast against the wild scrawls.
I continued with Averta across the back page and spine, simply to continue the minimal feel. I like the high legibility of Averta when paired with my typography!
Overall, I'm really happy with the results! I think it's really clean, intriguing and mysterious. It is how a book cover by me should look, and I think i'm getting to a point wherein the work I produce is noticeably mine. This is good!
