OUGD603 / Extended Practice / Yearbook / New Textures & Barnbrook as Maximalism

A workshop with Peter Barker a few months ago inspired me to start trying out spray paint as a means of creating texture and colour. I bought fluorescent blue, yellow and magenta.


The effect on white card (in this case blank business cards) is completely beautiful and the layering of colour is clearly so natural and more interesting than anything produced on photoshop. The spray here has been applied very loosely from great distance to get the speckled effect.

Above shows how bringing the can nozzle closer to the paper starts creating these more intense shades of colour.

Above shows how the ink sinks into black stock but creates vague ghostly patterns that have merit in their own regard.



Above, Barnbrook was a proprietor of maximalism and throwing everything at the wall. His work for Adbusters is eye catching but more importantly matches the anti-establishment, often angry and angsty tone of voice. 

This is a prime example of aesthetic matching context. His work is a melting pot of disappointment and hate with sections of society; as such, one look at these spreads indicates that quickly and strikingly.
