David Carson has this strange reputation where everybody knows him but it's sort of sacrilege to mention his work as an influence. True, there is a lot of terrible work that has aged horrendously but his work for Ray Gun magazine still holds its' own as truly innovative and anarchic in its' composition.
There's a distinct lack of respect for reading text as 'usual' with the layouts going sideways and diagonally with strong, large typography catching the eye first and foremost. These spreads are good enough to be posters in their own right.
The cut and pasted imagery works so well in tandem with the distorted typography, it creates a very in-cohesive cohesion.
